His pacifism often put him at odds with political leaders. At the same time\, Rotch used his whaling business and international connections to build a fortune during a period of war and upheaval. \nCrabtree is a professor of history at San Francisco State University. Her research focuses on religion\, nation\, and the Atlantic world during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The book features artwork by Melissa Philley\, who works under the name Sawhand.

Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor star in the production based on Shattuck’s 2024 story collection. It follows two young men who meet at the New England Conservatory of Music in 1917 and later travel through rural Maine recording folk songs.\nThe film was an official selection at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.\n\nBowen will moderate a conversation about the film and Shattuck’s adaptation of his work for the screen.\n\nSpinner Publications will also welcome Shattuck on Wednesday\, Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Wamsutta Club. What began as a small fundraiser for the Westport Quaker Meeting has grown into a major event featuring thousands of affordable books\, sorted by genre\, for all ages. The sale continues July 12 through July 18 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The final day is July 19 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.\, with a $ 10-per-bag sale. \nIt draws large crowds\, especially on opening day. Shoppers gather ahead of the 11 a.m. opening of the main tents. Those seeking a quieter visit may prefer to attend during the following week\, when hours run daily from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. \nOpening day is July 11. Early sales begin at 10 a.m. with $1 paperbacks and puzzles. A children-only entry opens at 10:45 a.m. in the Meeting House. Full access to the main tents and Community House begins at 11 a.m. Grounds close at 7 p.m.
