DESCRIPTION:Author Sarah Crabtree will discuss “Quaker\, Whaler\, Traitor\, Spy!” from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday\, Aug. 27. The free program is virtual\, and registration is required. \nThe graphic history follows Quaker merchant William Rotch\, who was accused of treason four times by three governments during the Age of Revolution. His pacifism often put him at odds with political leaders. At the same time\, Rotch used his whaling business and international connections to build a fortune during a period of war and upheaval. \nCrabtree is a professor of history at San Francisco State University. Her research focuses on religion\, nation\, and the Atlantic world during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The book features artwork by Melissa Philley\, who works under the name Sawhand.
