The Stars that Guide Us Exhibition
December 15, 2023 - April 21, 2024

The Stars that Guide Us by New Bedford artist Roy Rossow will open at the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s Center Street Gallery on Friday, Dec. 15.
These paintings were created specifically for Rossow’s solo show. He wanted to show off New Bedford’s working waterfront, modern maritime trade, and historic celestial navigation to highlight the region’s coastal community. By contrasting modern navigation mechanisms with historical themes, viewers can better understand the coastal mariners of today.
It is also a significant undertaking for the artist, who became paralyzed as a child due to polio. Rossow increased the scale of his work by leveraging a hydraulic lift to maneuver across each canvas. As part of the exhibition, visitors will see photos and time-lapse videos of Rossow’s process. Also included is a selection of objects and models from the Museum collection that reflect ideas related to astral navigation and the working waterfront.
