Polar Bears (Ursus Maritimus) and the Arctic Imaginary

The New Bedford Whaling Museum holds a deep collection of hundreds of original artworks, photographs, carvings, and material culture depicting or made from polar bears. In this exhibition, British, German, Dutch, and American prints join Iñupiat carvings, baleen baskets, historical photographs; decorated dinner plates; paintings, and more. POLAR BEARS (Ursus Maritimus) and the Arctic Imaginary showcase a cross-section of extraordinary artworks to explore humankind’s fascination with and relationship with this elusive species.
