New Bedford City Council

The New Bedford City Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 8, in city council chambers at City Hall.

On the agenda:

  • An order from Mayor Mitchell pertaining to health insurance benefits.
  • An order from Mayor Mitchell to enter into a five-year lease to purchase two equipped ambulances for $807,000, one transit van for $192,198 and one truck for $63,325.
  • A request from Mayor Mitchell requesting the Committee on City Property begin seeking proposals for the disposition of a long-term leasehold interest at 26 Union Street, formerly the National Club.
  • Several orders transferring funds.
  • Several orders authorizing revolving fund spending in 2024.
  • A loan order appropriating $20 million for financing the cost of projects outlined in the city’s Long Term CSO Control plan.
  • An order authorizing three school bus transportation contracts for the 2023-26 school years.
  • An order authorizing the Mayor to negotiate for and hire an associate city solicitor by June 30.
  • A motion requesting DPI fill every pothole and sweep each street along the Cape Verdean Recognition Day Parade route, as well as cutting back any overgrowth from vacant lots.
  • A motion to close a portion of Commercial Street, including portions of the sidewalks, from Aug. 1 to Dec. 1, 2023, a five-month extension of the current street closing.
  • A motion requesting Police and Health departments consider surprise visits to smoke shops and retailers to check for underage youth purchasing.
  • Renewal of private livery licenses for Anthony Snow, Alik Bokhari, Sumaira Bokhari, and Gabriel Macedo.
  • Community Preservation Committee submitting the CPA annual budget for 2024.
  • A copy of an open meeting law complaint form from Patrick Higgins that the city council’s quasi Committee of the Whole violated it during a remote meeting on May 23.
  • Memorial Park Bench and Tree Dedication applications for William “Bud” Montigny and Elizabeth “Betty” Montigny for a memorial park bench and plaque near the tennis grove in Buttonwood Park.
  • A letter of support sent to the state regarding the city’s 2023 MassWorks Infrastructure Program grant application.
  • MassDEP notification of an update regarding the site suitability application of South Coast Renewables (formerly Parallel Products).
