Moby Dick in Days of Pestilence and Chaos Exhibit

December 22, 2022 - February 26, 2023

Moby Dick in Days of Pestilence and Chaos will be on view from Dec. 22, 2022–Feb. 26, 2023, in the Whaling Museum’s Observation Deck Gallery.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and working through the 2020 lockdown, Boston-based artist Aileen Callahan (b. 1941) created seventy watercolors that explore themes of contagion and the fear of the unknown as described by author Herman Melville (1819-1891) in the novel Moby-Dick (1851). This exhibit compels viewers with modern vantage points of illness and complements the museum’s 27th annual Moby-Dick Marathon on January 6–8, 2023.
