The prolific Elfrida Andrée, the student of Niels Gade, activist in the Swedish women’s movement, is finally receiving recognition a century after her passing. Her richly turbulent Piano Trio No. 2 in G Minor reflects a momentous inner life. The equally prolific William Grant Still, widely considered the Dean of Afro-American Composers, conceived his Lyric Quartette (Musical Portraits of Three Friends) as a personal journey full of nostalgia and tenderness. Finally, the incredibly prolific Leo Ornstein continues to shock listeners with his Piano Quintet, a work of unforgettable power.
