2021 Southcoast Food System Assessment Report Virtual Presentation

Just prior to the pandemic settling in, The Marion Institute launched a study to update the 2014 Food System Assessment for Southeastern MA. The goals of the Assessment are:
- To provide an updated landscape of the region’s food system assets incorporating broader research, surveys, and stakeholder interviews.
- Share progress made since the first report and current challenges.
- Identify intervention points where policy can support an equitable and sustainable food system for all in the region.
- To raise awareness of Southeastern Massachusetts’ contributions to statewide and New England food system planning work.
With the help of Northbound Ventures and nearly 300 community partners that represent farmers, fishers, food pantries, churches, social service agencies, schools, institutional buyers, and a myriad group of partner organizations throughout Southeastern Massachusetts, the 2021 Assessment of the Food System was published and released in November 2021.
The public is welcome to join the SFPC for a virtual presentation of the 2021 Food System Assessment on either Thursday, Jan. 6 at 9 am or Thursday, Jan. 13 at 6:30 pm. The presentation will review key takeaways from the report. Email the Marion Institute to register for these events at sfpc@marioninstitute.org.
The results of this report demonstrate the need and value of local supply chains that create tight, circular economies among local producers and consumers, and the need for interpersonal relationships that make them resilient to external disruptions.
The 2021 Southcoast Food System Assessment will be used as a road map for the Southcoast Food Policy Council’s Community Advisory Board in developing policy and working group priorities for years to come. The mission of the Southcoast Food Policy Council is to connect, convene, and advocate for local food producers, consumers and community partners who seek to generate policies and practices that strengthen our regional food system, enhance food security and promote health equity.
